NB: Actually this is once again shifted to Tuesday for the Winners announcement from last weeks giveaway! Enjoy!
Stan and Jane…. meet Julian….
The door opened. The two people who walked in couldn’t have been more opposite to one another. She was a tall thin auburn haired woman in a dark blue pantsuit and he was a short and portly man with jet black in a light gray suit. The only thing that gave them away as being from the police department and not social services was their matching badges clipped to their waistbands.
“Julian?” The woman smiled at him. She seemed like she was trying to feel him out. To see if he was going to break down like a child. He wasn’t a child anymore and he would not act like one either.
“Hi, I’m Detective Stan Brookshire, and this here is my partner Detective Jane Trinity.” The man said reaching out a hand for him to shake as he dragged a chair from the table in the center of the room and sat himself down in front of him.
Julian shook his hand.
“Well I have heard that you are a very lucky man to be alive right now.” Detective Brookshire started.
“I don’t feel so lucky, so you’ll have to excuse me.”
“I know it’s hard when things like this happen. We want to know the reasons why it happened to-“
“Spare me alright? I am not a child that needs comforting-got that? What I am is pissed off. Those assholes killed my mom! Why I don’t know and at the moment I don’t even know if it really matters.
What matters to me is that they are caught and brought to justice! “Didn’t these two get it, if they were detectives like they say then why weren’t they out trying to find the men who did this to Martha? Instead of talking to me like I’m a sniveling baby
A look passed between them, the type that said that she had tried. Why were they here in the first place? The other officers had already questioned me five separate times. How many more times would i have to tell the same story?
“Alright big guy, don’t get all up in a snot. As I can see from your disposition at the moment you are a hair’s breath away from going out to find these jerks yourself. That close enough to what you are feeling right now?”
Julian eyed the man for a moment and then nodded.
“Thought so, because if that was me sitting there that would be exactly what I would be thinking of doing. I know how you feel son about wanting to serve justice to those who deserve it. It is the reason I grew up to be a cop in the first place.
For the moment though-until you get through all of that schooling and the academy of course-you are going to have sit back and let us do our job and get these bastards for you. And you have my word, that if you cooperate I will personally make sure that they are brought to justice for you. Is that fair enough for you?”
Julian was starting to like this detective, he didn’t pull any punches. Maybe he could trust him. For now anyways. He nodded again.
“Alright then. Now that we have a deal. I want you to apologize to my partner here, she was only trying to be nice, not stepping on your manhood.”
Julian sat there for a moment, who the hell did this guy think he was? But he found himself mumbling an apology anyway.
“There that wasn’t so hard now was that?
“So let’s get down to business shall we? You want me out there catching these people, and I want to see them caught, so I need to get out there with as much information as possible. Otherwise I won’t be able to do squat even if I do find them. So what I need from you is for you to go over what exactly happened last night, I need every detail.”
“But I already told them everything I know. I don’t understand why I have to keep going over everything again and again. It’s a waste of time!”
“Hang on a second. Did you ever stop to think why we might be doing it? Every person who asked you what happened asked you in a different way. Every time you talked about it you told you story a little differently.”
“So basically you want to see if I am lying?” Julian looked at him and then at the woman who sat there with her notebook open and pen poised to take notes on whatever it was that he was going to tell them.
“No. See here’s the funny thing about the human brain. When a traumatic event happens our brain tends to want to block out as much of it as possible. It is called a defense mechanism. It happens to everyone.
The point is, is that when different people ask you the same thing over and over again we are able to get a broader picture of what happened. We get more details. I have already read the report that the other officers took.
That is what took me so long to get in here in the first place. Now I want to hear it all from you first hand. I want to hear everything you can remember. I want to know as much about you as I can too.”
“Why about me? What does that have to do with anything?”
“Well, you see, I have another-“
“Stan!” Jane whispered, “You cant tell him about that!”
“Jane the boy needs to know; maybe he can lead us to the connection, and maybe who is behind this all.”
Julian looked at the two of them locked in a staring competition.
“Another what? What’s going on?”
Jane threw up her hands and stood up and went over to the counter in the other end of the room to make herself a coffee.
“”See the reason my partner is mad at me at the moment is because she doesn’t think that I should be telling you what I am about to tell you. But I think that you are man enough to keep you mouth zipped and I figure you might be able to tell me something that will make a difference. So can you do it?”
“Keep your mouth shut?” The man looked at him with his eye brow raised.
“Yeah, who would I tell anyway? My mom is gone now, and there is only my best friend Larry, that I talk to about important shit. And I don’t think he would believe me even if I told him so no I won’t be saying anything to anyone.”
“Alright, here is the deal. We are working on a case that happened last night as well under the very same circumstances as yours. Only this happened to the daughter of a prominent Chinese family and she is now missing. I find it very hard to believe that these two cases are not related in any way. What I need from you is to start at the beginning and work from there.”
Julian thought about it for a moment, and then his mind suddenly remembered something he had forgotten to tell the other officers who had questioned him.
Something about another case had triggered his memory of it.
