Please welcome Roxanne to my blog in advance of her upcoming release on April 14th!
Most likely to die of embarrassment. Never raised my hand. Never talked out of turn.
Were you good at English?
I rocked grammar. I loved parsing sentences! Oddly, I hated creative writing. In grade six, one of my assignments was to write an additional chapter in a young adult book, can’t remember which book or who the author was. I think it had raccoons in it. Anyway, *that* assignment I enjoyed. And I got an A+. Maybe that’s where it started… hm…
What genre are your books?
I’ve had work published in various genres: a series of young adult animal books, published in paper and digital format, one literary short story and one mystery short story, both in paperback anthologies, one literary/mystery novel in paperback, three romance novels and one romance novella, all digital only.
What draws you to this genre?
I like mystery because of the darkness. <cue the scary music> But I like romance because it’s guaranteed to end well!
Do you ever get writer’s Block?
I used to say, “No! I write through the block, until things start making sense again. Writer’s block is for sissies and whiners.” I got pretty badly blocked on my latest manuscript though, so now I’m a sissy-whiner. I set it aside (actually I sent it to my editors, who’ve probably decided to delete me from their contact list now) and will pick it up again shortly.
Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?
Get outside help. I’ve got a few writer/reader friends, plus my editors, who are far, far better at plotting than I. I truly hate showing my massively-horrible drafts, but I have to swallow my pride if I want to figure out what’s wrong.
If this book is part of a series, tell us a little about it?
My current work-in-progress is the fourth in my Three River Ranch series, contemporary westerns with great heroes that are all, in some way, attached to cowboy country. And they can all ride horseback and totally rock a pair of jeans! It’s set in a fictional Montana town and I’ve been told by an actual Montana reader that I nailed it! <whew>
What are your thoughts on writing a book series.
I love having secondary characters carry on from one book to the next. I’ve got a pair of bickering sisters named Bliss and Blythe who refer to each other as Blister and Blight and generally act as town grandmothers/bosses. I just love them! It’s challenging though to continue the world as I’ve written it, but make sure each book still makes sense on its own.
Do you read much and if so who are your favourite authors.
Oh my goodness, you’ll regret asking. I read all the time. As a professional author, my books are tax deductible, too, thank goodness. Susan Elizabeth Phillips. Kristan Higgins. James Lee Burke. Barbara Kingsolver. Margaret Atwood’s Orxy and Crake trilogy. Linda Lael Miller. Dean Koontz. Lee Child. Sheila Roberts. Joyce Carol Oates. Annie Proulx. Elizabeth Berg. Robyn Carr. Agatha Christie. I’m going to stop now.
For your own reading, do you prefer ebooks or traditional paper/hard back books?
I’ve got all, and will continue to read on all. In fact, I have a Kindle and a Kobo. In bed, which is where I do almost all of my pleasure reading, an e-reader is so much easier on my wrists. Not to mention, my aged eyes. But on the beach, it’s got to be a paperback. And some books I simply must have in hardback.
When I have time, definitely. Sometimes my deadlines are too tight, in which case I am so grateful for the careful eyes of my editors, line-editors and proofreaders.
Who edited your book and how did you select him/her?
I currently write for Entangled Publishing and they do a simply fantastic job of whipping books into shape. My senior editor, Stacy Cantor Abrams, is a gem, a teeny-tiny eagle-eyed angel.
