Q&A with Alice C. Hart

q & a

This week on the blog is another of my fellow authors from Sexy in the City Toronto.. the every beautiful… Alice Hart!

allyhartWhat were you like at school?

I loved school. It was more of a social event for me than anything. Looking back, I wonder what could have happened had I gave a fuck and applied myself.

Were you good at English?

I rocked English… In school. I’m pretty sure I’d fail miserably now. Math was not my strong point and still isn’t. Fuck numbers n shit.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

I’d love to have a writing career. For this to happen, I need people to read and hopefully love what I write. This is going to be hard for me because I love being a tad un-conventional. I don’t care about HEA’s, love cliffhangers, I love all the things that a lot of people don’t like lol.

Which writers inspire you?

So, what have you written?

I wrote a book. It’s called, Obsession. The main character is loosely based on me. All the other characters are based on my friends.

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

My story is told from three different POV’s. My main bitch, Abby Osborne actually has a job, an apartment, and so does her love interest, Jake Jackson. They both work at a homeless shelter.

What I love about my characters, they are not perfect. They drink, they smoke, they party. I feel like they live their lives without apologising but also aren’t hurting anyone at the same time. People aren’t perfect. Life isn’t perfect. It’s messy, complicated, and sometimes you have a stalker LOL.

What are you working on at the minute?Small New e Cover

Oh lord, I have three things I’m currently working on. Book 2 to the Stalker Series is top priority. I also want it to kick ass and refuse to release it until I feel it’s good enough.

What genre are your books?

This series is Romantic/Suspense, sprinkled with a hint of funny.

What draws you to this genre?

I’m generally drawn to dark reads. I’m not saying my book is dark. It isn’t. It’s really only, tip of the dick creepy.

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?

God, Mila Kunis is the perfect Abby and I love Jensen Ackles as Jake. I actually had no idea who I wanted my stalker to be. Zero image. Then, the book trailer was born and I guess someone saw something I didn’t and BOOM… Hello, Justice Joslin!!!

Have you written any other novels in collaboration with other writers?

Not yet… But I’m sure hell going to!!!

When did you decide to become a writer?

I don’t you decide to become a writer. I’ve always written things and have had a different way with words. It wasn’t until I started reading Indie Authors about three years ago that I realised, books didn’t have to suck, follow any rules, and I could write books that I’d want to read myself.

Why do you write?

My Therapist said I needed an outlet *shrugs*

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?

There is nothing about me that’s structured. I do love to write first thing in the morning with a cup of tea. Or two.

Do you write on a typewriter, computer, dictate or longhand?

I just got a Mac. So, it’s like I’ve landed on another planet and I’m learning how to use it.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?

I’m a write by the seat of my pants kind of gal. I do make notes though. I have pads of paper with scribbles that only I would be able to understand.

How do you think you’ve evolved creatively?

I’ve evolved entirely. My world has changed. For the better.

What is the hardest thing about writing?

Trying to make sure it doesn’t suck. Trying not to offend people’s sensibilities but realising, it doesn’t matter what you write. People will always have something to say, so why not go for it?

Do you ever get writer’s Block?

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

I stop and work on something else. Or, I read. Reading usually toggles something in my brain that gets the wheels spinning when my hamster falls asleep.

If this book is part of a series, tell us a little about it?

Yes. The Stalker Series. I think the second book will finish what I started. I want to move on with other projects that I’m excited about.

Do you read much and if so who are your favourite authors.

I love a lot of the Original Gansta Indie Authors like, Tara Sivec, Helena Hunting, Colleen Hoover, and Kendall Grey, RL Mathewson, Rebecca Donovan, I know I’m missing more. But I’ve also fallen hard for some new authors. I can’t name them all. There are just too many.

For your own reading, do you prefer ebooks or traditional paper/hard back books?

I prefer to read ebooks but hoard signed paperbacks.

Approved Teaser 3What book/s are you reading at present?

Corrupt by Penelope Douglas.

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?

Yes, and I love my cover.

How are you publishing this book and why?

Indie. Writing is fun for me. I don’t have a boss. For the first time in my life, I set my pace. The only way I’d ever go with a publisher is to put my books in stores. And, even if that never happens, I’m still a happy woman because I’m doing everything my way!!! (*e.g. Indie, traditional or both)

How do you market your books?

I blast on Social Media. I network with people. I’m kind of fun so people like to be around me n stuff.

Why did you choose this route?

Because I didn’t know any other LOL

Would you or do you use a PR agency?

I don’t. Should I?

What do you do to get book reviews?

Great question. I’m thinking about offering sex on the side with each sale. Bahahaha, just kidding. Or am I??? I’ve sold quite a few books. More than I even thought. I’ve given away so many copies at online events. But, I can’t make the people write reviews. Even if they said they would. It sucks donkey balls too. An author needs to get past 50 reviews to get into the algorithm on Amazon. It puts you into more searches. This is why we Authors beg for reviews. And, when you are a nobody and brand new, it’s the hardest job. I’m not a best seller of any kind. I only have one book out.

How successful has your quest for reviews been so far?

After busting my ass, begging, pleading, selling my soul to the devil, I’ve done ok. I had some help from my amazing friends.

What are your thoughts on good/bad reviews?

I need them all. Let’s talk about bad reviews. Every single Author has them. Not everyone is going to like your book. You can put all the warning labels you want, it doesn’t matter. Someone will read it and hate it. It’s OK. It would be nice if people were constructive instead of saying, “Hey, you suck, quit writing,” or “I skimmed the book,” ß— that’s not reading it. I feel books are like movies. You don’t know what you’re getting. It’s a surprise. Do you want to know how it ends before you even go? Maybe you liked it, maybe you didn’t. Do you bash actors based on one performance?

Any amusing story about marketing books that happened to you?

Can I tell you… I hit publish by mistake. Two weeks early. No ARCS went out. NOTHING. I was so not prepared. It was a big old whoops. I then had my release party two weeks later.

Which social network worked best for you?Approved Teaser 1

Any tips on what to do and what not to do?

I don’t ever tell people what to do!!!

Did you get interviewed by local press/radio for your book launch?

Bahahaha, I wish.

Did you make any marketing mistakes or is there anything you would avoid in future?

I’m always going to make mistakes. It’s how I roll. So, I don’t put pressure on myself like that.

What do you think of “trailers” for books?

I love them. I love mine ❤

Do you have a trailer or do you intend to create one for your own book/s?

In what formats is your book available?

Just Amazon. It was on other platforms but it wasn’t worth it.

How do you relax?

Ummm, if you read my book it will be fairly obvious how I relax lmao

What is your favourite motivational phrase?

If you write it, they will read it. Alice C. Hart

What is your favourite positive saying?

What is your favourite book and why?

I love love love Seduction & Snacks by Tara Sivec and stalk her on a regular. She knows. It’s not a secret LOL
